Nicknamed the “Green Heart of Italy”, Umbria is a small, landlocked region of the Bel Paese. Bordered by the Apennines to the east, the region’s green and placid landscape is a natural extension of Tuscany. Its rolling hills, through which snake the famous Tiber river on its way to Rome, are suitable for many red, white, indigenous and imported grape varieties. Its white wines, which account for about 80% of regional production, include Orvieto, by far the region’s most famous. Once a favorite of the papacy, this pale, clear and vibrant wine is both particularly renowned and a huge commercial success overseas. Produced in Abboccato and Amabile versions, Orvieto is made with Trebbiano grapes (locally called Procanico), as well as smaller quantities of Malvasia, Verdello and Grechetto—the latter being a popular local variety known for its robust character. The recent emergence of IGT (Indicazione geografica tipica) in the region has facilitated the incorporation of international varieties, like Chardonnay, Sauvignon and Pinot, which are vinified in modern and convincing fashion. Located a little further east, the region’s two DOCGs, Sagrantino di Montefalco and Torgiano Rosso Riserva make red wines with unique and powerful characteristics.
